How To Be The Best Member Of Your Executive Board
Congratulations! You have officially been slated as one of your chapter’s executive officers. If you’re anything like I was when I was first slated into my position on exec, I’m sure you’re probably a mix of being excited, overwhelmed and nervous. Being on exec has definitely been one of the most rewarding parts of my college experience and has allowed me to grow so much as a person and as a leader. To help you feel just a bit more prepared, here are 5 tips and tricks on how to be the best leader!
Regardless of your position, you’re going to make some tough decisions that not
everyone in the chapter will be a fan of. More often than not, as long as you are confident in yourself and in your decisions, girls will respect the tough calls you need to make as a member of exec.
Come to as many sorority related events as possible!
As a member of exec, it can definitely be difficult to be excited to come to every event the chapter puts on. Because you’re already crazy busy focusing on your own programming area on top of balancing school and even work, making a constant effort to meet new members and be at every single thing can start to seem like a chore. Just remember that you are now a role model to the rest of the chapter, and if you stop making an effort to stay involved, the rest of the chapter will follow in your footsteps.
Be open to constructive criticism :)
Criticism can be hard to take, but it’s important for chapter members to feel like their voices are heard. Make an effort to listen to girls if they offer suggestions on how you can improve as an officer. Staying open to suggestions and having the ability to handle criticism well are some of the best ways to grow as an officer!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Throughout my term, I’ve found that being able to delegate responsibilities is the KEY to being a successful officer. If you ever start to feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities you have at hand, don’t be afraid to reach out to the rest of exec as well as the rest of the chapter for support. It will make your life a lot easier, and other chapter members are able to catch a glimpse of what it means to be on exec! Additionally, be sure to reach out to the girl who was previously in your position for any tips and tricks about how to be the best officer you can be!
Like they always say, you will get out what you put in. Make an effort to get to know the
rest of your exec board and don’t be afraid to let loose and have fun! When I was first slated into my position, I was really only close friends with 1 of the other 7 girls. Throughout the past year, the 8 of us have become extremely close and I honestly consider these girls to be lifelong friends. We have had our ups and downs but I would not trade our time together for the world!
